The way the French are parenting thier kids was the way my mom was raised growing up. And she’s 47. ? parents today are just too lazy.
problem with those studies is they never did a study with? only children whose parents always treated them with respect, never became angry or yelled, & used spanking with calm, clear communication about authority & discipline. Many speak to their children disrespectfully, become angry, yell, & hit. This is much different than using spanking as a part of a calm, well communicated form of discipline. I never truly understood the difference until I read Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp.
BellClan37 – While I understand and appreciate your? point of view, I do disagree with how you phrased a certain aspect. “Admitting that yours (and mine) were wrong does not mean they were BAD parents…” implies that the “wrongness” of spanking is a factual assertion, when it is in fact an opinion – one that is shared by many people. I’m not saying that its wrong that you, and others, think spanking is wrong – just offering a less “judgmental” (for lack of a lighter term) way to voice that.
This is def. not something that was lost in translation – my daughter was sleeping thru the nite at 6 weeks. I live in France and have a French? wife, reading this book is so funny for me because she does everything just like in the book. It is indeed very different, it works for us.
We aren’t all religious, why did you HAVE to? say that an unassisted home birth includes god? Please stay neutral.
In France,? maternity leave is 16 weeks only.
Just for the info, not that we are representative of the whole country but myself, brother and sister all slept through the night at 1 month! (midnight to 6/7? am)
(Baby sleeping through the night also encourages? mama’s menstruation returning more quickly, which isn’t healthy for mama in the long term!)
The only concern I have with the French parenting thing is the obsession with getting your very young baby sleeping through the night. Babies, particularly breastfed ones, often NEED to feed through the night. Nighttime/sleeping is when their brains are developing the quickest, and the breast milk during that time helps fuel? this development, plus breast milk doesn’t stay in the tummy long, so babies can get hungry during the night!
I’m not even pregnant yet nor do I plan to be until I’m done? with school but I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! I have a question for you and maybe you can look it up more or get people who have tried this to tell you their experiences but I wanted to know if you knew about red raspberry leaf tea? I’ve heard and read about it in a book for natural healing or something and it said it was good for pregnant women to help with strengthen the uterus and help make birth easier. Any ideas?
Spanking: I was spanked by my father, and Idk if it was how calm and direct he was, or that also he was always so positive,? supportive and loving, but I felt it worked for me. HOWEVER, I want to avoid ever spanking my son. My mother was secretively abusive to my brother and I, and I want to parent with absolutely no hitting or screaming. I’m going to get a copy of the book featured. I’m currently reading about attachment parenting,
well nots? not forget that in France you also get from a year to 2 years leave from work, compared to Americans who get , what? 3 months?? Those first few years have a major impact on Baby, and mama.
I’m French, and let me tell you, I slept through the night at 3 (years old, not months). It all depends on the baby. But we do have those parenting “techniques”?
Idk I think it really depends on the? family. For ours, it worked and maybe for mine it will too. Guess it will depend on if I’m even half as good a mother as she was and is. I don’t see myself doing it much but at this point I have no issue against it based on my ‘good’ experience with it so I don’t see myself not ever doing it either.
I think that’s a really good point. I agree it is kinda ‘old school’ but i don’t think it’s all bad or wrong.I think it so depends on the kid and how he/she is parented overall. I don’t see much wrong with it as a very last resort (which is what my parents did) i think i was spanked 7-10 times as a kid over, maybe 6 years. But i think my mom did a really good job with us overall so we learned? mostly in other ways.
One of the biggest reasons people continue the “spanking” tradition is because “well my parents spanked me.” Admitting that yours (and mine) were wrong does not mean they were BAD parents, it just means we have the knowledge and courage to do something? different, better, and safer with our children. Some of “our” parents drove cars with no seat belts – we wouldn’t do that now, many of “our” parents smoked during pregnancy – we wouldn’t do that now – We know better so we can act better.
it’s? very impolite, even rude, no to acknowledge people by saying hello, thank you, please and goodbye when going to restaurant, shop or buying a metro ticket for example, not only in France but also in Italy, Spain, Germany and that something the American, Japanese and Chinese don’t necessarily do and don’t realize how upsetting and annoying it can be. so, next time you visit one of this country, just say hello in there respective language and you’ll have a great time, simple as that!
i’m french and the first time i’ve heard about kid food and funsy food is when i had to move to England for work. when i was young i had to eat what my parents ate, negotiating was out of the question and when you grow up in a village, like i did, you had to say “bonjour” to every adult you come across or else be labeled as impolite by the community. I also played football all my childhood and my parents? came to see me play maybe twice as it was more like a personal experience with my mate.
We’ve been knowing since the middle? age that France is superior than the anglo-saxon culture !!!
Even William the Conqueror knew this !!!! That’s why he invaded England !!!
Just for EDUCATION !!!!
French parenting secrets? Umm.. the 3 things listed seem pretty common sense to me and? more parents should be like that. I might have to get this book and share it with friends and family that have kids.. : )
if you take child development classes, you learn how bad Time Out is for children too! Time Out is a no no!?
Read Montaigne and Dolto,? and you will understand…
Great show!! That is a very interesting book. We try to teach our kids that no means no. I definitely feel we need to remember? to teach our kids how to behave instead of having to punish so much.
Sounds? like an interesting book. I think that maybe this works because the parents are being an example of how their children should act. Rather than the American tactic of acting like a fool to get your kids to behave haha.
Id love to read that book, it definitely sounds like they have some great parenting ideals over? there.
I’m 19 and I was raised to be respectful. I’ve never been grounded and I feel like I treat others with respect.
I’m behind the dad completely. It sounded like this girl has done this before so she got what she got.?
if i was friends? with that girl and she used my laptop to post something like that on facebook, would my laptop be shot too?
